While some people have chosen to knock down walls or create additions to better suit the needs of their family, many have simply taken down tired wallpaper and rearranged furniture. Whether your home improvement is major or minor it could inadvertently lead to a healthier home for you and your family.

There are many steps in the renovation process, but the most agreed upon first step is to remove everything from the room you are renovating. With the furniture and knick-knacks gone you can really see the potential for the room. You can also get a better idea of the hidden problems. One problem that is often uncovered during renovations is mold.

A mold problem, even a large one, can go undetected in a home for years. Mold, or signs of mold are often hidden behind artwork or in corners behind chairs. Removing these item for the renovations will make spotting a mold problem easier.

If you have decided a minor renovation is what your house needs, keep your eyes open for clues that there might be mold in areas that were previously hard to see. Look for discoloration on your walls or floor. Mold can grow under carpets and on the inside of walls. You will not always see the tell-tale black fuzzy stuff on your wall because the actual mold may be on the interior side, but in this case there is often a discoloration of the wall that faces the room. Give a careful look to your carpets as well. Sometimes furniture can cover areas where mold has had the chance to grow. Wallpaper, especially in rooms where there is a lot of moisture, can be a breeding ground for mold. If you are taking the paper down be on the lookout for mold.

If you are doing a major renovation, one that involves removing walls, spotting mold is a lot easier. Unfortunately, leaky pipes inside walls can lead to mold and the easiest way to see this damage is when the sheetrock on the walls is removed. If you are taking down walls, make sure to inspect both the back of the sheetrock as well as the studs for any signs of mold.
